Lovers poison 6-months-old baby to death in Abuja
A young couple who had a baby out of wedlock have been arrested in
Abuja after they conspired to kill the infant with poison.
A 23-year-old man identified simply as Abdullahi has been arrested alongside his 17-year-old lover, Hasiya, by the police in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for allegedly poisoning their six-months-old baby to death.
Daily Trust reports that the lovers had allegedly given the infant a liquid substance suspected to be rat poison in the Gwarinpa of the FCT which resulted in its death.
According to a police source, the couple had conspired to murder the child they had out of wedlock in the night of Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at a location off 69 Road in the area.
It was gathered that Hasiya had invited Abdullahi to come and check on the sick baby on the day of the incident.
The police source said:
“Abdullahi had given Hasiya money to buy drugs from a nearby pharmacy and administered it on the baby. After taking the tablet, the baby started vomiting some foamy substance.”
The source said a resident alerted the police at the Gwarimpa Division after the incident led to chaos in the area.
The Gwarinpa Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Nuruddeen Sabo who confirmed the incident, said the suspects were not staying together, describing them as boyfriend and girlfriend.
CSP Sabo added that preliminary investigation showed that the lovers had conspired and administered a liquid substance suspected to be 'ota pia pia', (rat poison), on their baby whom they got out of wedlock.
The DPO continued that the smell of the poison was perceived on the baby when the police retrieved the body from the hospital and would be taken for autopsy while the suspects are in police custody.
